• Information re markets in North America

I slipped a question regarding American markets into another thread in the lounge, but it really should be here.

The question is, what resources would you recommend to look into American markets? I have short stories in mind in particular.

And another question, more a matter of curiousity than anything else: If 1) someone is fortunate enough to have their work accepted, and 2) is so lucky as to get paid for it, how on earth would you get paid in the UK???

    Hi Ani,

My first novel has recently been accepted for publication by an American publisher. Copyright works much the same there as it does here, with the added option of paying for the novel to be filed in the library of congress to protect against this copyright being breached or the material being plagiarised. Most decent publishers would take care of this for you in the states.

My contract states that payment will be made to me every six months. I assume this will be in the form of a cheque, but seeing as I haven't got round to seeing a publishing lawyer who specialiss in US law yet, I'm still a bit vague about it myself.

I'll give you an update in the next couple of weeks. As for short stories, maybe if you google American magazines and short story colelctions, it may give you a clearer idea. Or check out :

www.writersservices.com where they have a full list of US agents.

    Hope this helps a little.
