This is the book I mentioned on the writing exercise thread, which is set on an island where 'The Quick Brown Fox...' sentence is idolised and set in a monument in the centre of town.
However, one by one, letters from the sentence mysteriously fall and smash on the ground. Once a letter has fallen, it is removed from all written and spoken language by law, with severe punishments for anyone who breaks the rules.
Told in a series of letters, this charming story is a fascinating look at how these events affect a very literary and erudite community. It also shows just how important language is to us, both as a mode of personal expression and as a political right.
It doesn't take itself too seriously and it's a fun read for anyone who enjoys Scrabble!
