First Act of a Romantic Comedy - where Maurice the loser in love gets lucky ... 

The initial chapters reveal the de Beaulieu’s relocation to England from France - at the insistence of Queen Isabella who arranged for the marriage of Philippa to her son, Edward III. A Fair Place begins its story in 1327 and centres on the orphan and misfit, Margaret, who is reluctant to move from the beautiful Hainault valley to the cold Cumbria hills. 

For those who have read Chapter 1, Carrie's name has been altered to 'Tully Bellis'. Hope this doesn't ruin people's perception of the story, but I feel it fits better.
