Tell us something about your background.
I directed plays and acted (quite badly) at university. Then worked at Macdonalds. Then worked as a script reader for lots of places like The National Theatre, BBC, Yorkskire TV, Central etc Then set up and run a charity called First Film Foundation for new writers and film makers. Then worked for half a year at the BBC making a one-off drama (“Paradise” by Anna Reynolds).

How do you find writers?
How do you find writers?
Any typical/common mistakes that new writers tend to make?
I think quite a bit of self-censorship goes on and too much thought about what might get made rather than what should get made. I think the most startling films of the last few years – eg. American Beauty, The Pledge, City of Gods, Amores Perros, The Last Resort, Sexy Beast, There’s Something About Mary, Tomorrow La Scala - all feel authored and unlike anything else.
Do you ever work with writers who approach you, or who don’t come via agents?
Yup. But we ask to read a synopsis of the idea first.
