Up for the Orange Prize, this is an incredible piece of writing that got me in the heart, gut, memory, brain.. how many books do that? It's set in the uncomfortable geography of the Soham murders, and while not directly about that, touches on pre-teen girls and their world in a way that made my flesh crawl. It's truthful, honest, visceral writing from Jill Dawson. Fair to say that it's not strictly enjoyable; definitely not beach reading material, but it's stayed with me and is more thought provoking than many other much more hyped books this season. Have a stiff drink and approach this book with caution, but in my opinion, an utterly worthwhile read.
