Sylvanus Now is a beautifully written novel set in a small fishing community in Newfoundland in the 1950's. I came across it my accident and I am so glad it did.
At one level, it is the story of the troubled love between Sylvanus Now, a young fisherman who is most at ease when at sea, and his wife, Adelaide, who dreams of escape. All of this is set against the backdrop of a fishing community whose way of life is being irrevocably changed by shifting economic factors which Sylvanus feels but is helpless to influence.
The particular strength of this novel for me is Donna Morrissey's distinctive prose which captures so well the atmosphere of the place she is writing about and the feelings of her characters. I recommend it wholeheartedly.
