Of course I read and loved the book as a child, so had to see the film. The over-played poverty of the Bucket family and the build-up to the other children, and finally Charlie, finding the ticket was just great. After that, the Chocolate Factory part was more for the lovers of clever visuals and Johnny Depp, who looked great and sounded like one of the characters out of Little Britain.

There was an added plot line about Willy Wonka’s dentist dad who threw Willy’s trick or treat sweets on the fire and fitted him with a horrendous tooth brace which tied in nicely with Willy turning into a Chocolate maker and not being able to relate to children.

One thing that struck me about the film vs the book was that Mike TeeVee had been turned into a video game/gadget addict and, compared to the other children, he didn’t strike me as being so odd or unusual nowadays (sadly!).
