  • Texting Challenge
by Richard Brown at 15:13 on 16 February 2004
It's the 'Oops, I wish I hadn't sent that message, how can I get it back? please help me' challenge.
    Or...The perils of predictive texting..

Uncorrected, predictively texting, my phone would deliver:

'Bomb. I wolf after mind. Thanks for the nazi push. You were bad. Act in the acid. I'll take him good. Lips Mile for of. Might might. Dial.'

...when what I really meant to write was:

'Anna. I woke after nine. Thanks for the maxi push. You were ace. Cat in the cage. I'll take him home. Kiss Mike for me. Night night. Dick'

    Any advances...?

Sorry Richard, but I haven't either a mobile phone or the least idea what you're talking about!

I think it can be summed up as WHEN PREDICTIVE TEXTING GOES WRONG

With predictive text you need only to press the each key once to get word and it predicts what the outcome is going to be. Hence to get GOOD you just press 4663. However other words this produces are HOME, GONE, HOOD, HOOF, HONE, so instead of writing GONE HOME who could end up writing HOOF HOOD.

So James, I'd need a mobile to do this exercise?

    Thanks, BTW!

Richard, never mind predictive texting, what on earth is a "maxi push".

Erm... I'm a bit confused here, too. Sorry...

Are you going by the following code:

    2 - ABC
    3 - DEF
    4 - GHI
    5 - JKL
    6 - MNO
    7 - PQRS
    8 - TUV
    9 - WXYZ

Is that right? In which case, it is possible without a predicitve text phone, but might take a long time...???

One for the cypher books, maybe?

Maxi push? much more than a mini push and a bit more than a medium push. But it should have read 'rush' in the correct message not 'push' - not that it probably makes a lot of difference!
But yes, sorry folks, mobiles with predictive texting obligatory for this one. I just think it's interesting as to which words are given priority by the programmers, especially, for example, when 'nazi' comes out instead of 'maxi' I also like the fact that 'kiss' and 'lips' and 'ace' and 'bad' are substitutes. I just thought it might be amusing to see if anyone could come up with a complete and comic disaster of an unchecked message. But obviously not a good idea!
I think I'll think of something else to challenge the WW literary wits!
    Richard.

Richard are you sure the last word of your post is wits or did you get the wrong predicitve text word

I suppose 'wits' could have come out as 'zits'. Testing the zits? Hm, not nice! It might also have come out as 'whup' - sounds like something energetic which might be tested but I'm sure it's not a proper word. 'Whus'? a version of 'wuss'? - stretching it...Think I'll stick with wits.
