Someone has put me on to a site which has some useful information, especially a great description of passive and active, even I now understand the difference.

I'm useless at links, so if you google 'online writing lab' - the web not uk pages, you should get one for them called 'Purdue university's OWL family of sites. Click on that, then you will get the OWL family of sites. Click on the orange one - the OWL at Purdue, then click where it says 'the original owl at purdue site can be found via this link, then go to Grammar spelling and punctuation, down to verbs, active and passive.

Phew, sorry it seems longwinded, but it only takes a few moments. Can someone please tell me how to do links, for future use.

To make the link, copy the url (http://etc) and click the chain link image above the text window when posting a forum message, and paste the url into the box that pops up. The type 'click here' or something before the closing tag, which looks like this (/url) with square brackets.

Or you could just copy and paste the url directly into the message. It would appear as a link like this:

http://owl.english.purdue.edu/handouts/grammar/g_actpass.html

I think you're just missing the http: before the //www.

And then you need something like 'click here' between the /] and the [/url

It's difficult explaining this given the lack of a code window that most forums have. But if you look at the linking box to the left of the text window next time you're writing a post, it gives an example.

Snowcat, yes it does lok interesting, as it has lots of advice on all aspects of writing. It mentions things I've never even heard of too, like Gerunds - which are only verbs ending in 'ing', but I've never heard of them called gerunds before.

It has things like - Appositives, Dangling modifiers, and Spatial relationships of prepositions, which all sounds very complicated, but when you see the examples, it's quite easy really, and things we all do most of the time anyway.
