What's the word for a piece of needlepoint or stitching framed and put on the wall and usually being some kind of homily or quotation? I'm sure there's a nice word for it.
They were called samplers because they were created, usually by very young girls, to practice their stitches, and to work out which stitches to use for other pieces they were working on. The earliest ones were simply row after row of stitches, often including various alphabets. I believe it was the Victorians who turned them into works in their own right – including the uplifting quotations.
