I much prefer 1940s to 1940's and CDs to CD's. I think I read somewhere that again, it has changed to 1940s as the modern way to do it.
And I can do winkys now

Most British style guides have recently dropped the apostrophe for dates and abbreviations. Many USA style guides still insist on it.
