Just listening to this. Wonderful to hear you talk about TMOL. S

    Emma,

Utterly enjoyable hearing your voice describe scenes from TMOL! You sound so relaxed and poised in your reading; is this something you've worked on and been worried about doing in the marketing of your book, or is it something that is second nature to you?

    Thank you!

Roger yes, Rachael was lovely, and we had a couple of nice non-literary moments, in among all the books. The panel worked really well too, I think because we'd all met before, and had a feel for where each other was coming from. I like what I've read of her novel, too.

    Shika, thank you!

Erik, my first degree was in drama, so the standing-up-and-reading thing holds few terrors, but the talking-in-public thing was more alarming until I got used to it. (Talking in general, as WWers must have realised, doesn't hold many terrors for me either.) That conversation, particularly, was hugely helped by Kate Long being very very good at her job, and knowing the book and loving it, and being very nice, and that Headline took us out to dinner before hand so we could work out what was fruitful ground to discuss.

Yes, this was great. Good to hear your voice, and that TMOL is deservedly doing so well. My mum is absolutely loving it, but then I knew she would!!!

    Emma, you'll like this.

I did a quick search for 'The Mathematics of Love' on Amazon.ca and this turned up first:
Darwinian Reductionism : Or, How to Stop Worrying and Love Molecular Biology

I'm not sure what you'd call it but I find it pretty funny.

You'll be pleased to know I odered the LAST Canadian copy!

    Brian.

p.s. They say more are on their way.

JB, sorry I missed yours - glad your mum's enjoying (enjoyed?) it.

Brian, yes, that's pretty funny! Enjoy the book. Glad to know they're shipping (reprinting?) more. I think Headline are trying to get me into a Canadian festival or two, which would be fun, but that may have to wait for the next book - TMOL's not going to be terribly new by this time next year, which I gather is when they mostly are.

When is TMOL out in paperback Emma? My plan was to buy myself another copy, and yes, my mum is 'swept away' by your novel. It's right up her street, so thanks for the brownie points

It's due the 22nd March. Gorgeous, slightly tweaked cover, though very recognisable to anyone who's seen the hardback.

Ok, I may have a problem as I just bought the paperback here in Canada. I think maybe Amazon has its wires crossed because I don't think there is that much of a time difference between here and there.

It would explain some people's tardy responses to my comments or posts. Hmmm, wanders away pondering...

    Brian, confusion here, most understandably.

In the UK TMOL is a hardback at £12.99. In Headline's export markets - Ireland, Commonwealth and the open markets (Europe, South America, Middle and Far East??? Don't quote me) it's issued in what's called a trade paperback. Same size and cover and typography as hardback, good paper and so on. Price £10.99 or equivalent. That's what Amazon.ca have. It's not ecomomic to bind the smaller quantities those markets sell in hardback, and the markets there have got used to the orignial trade paperback. I was amused in NZ and Oz how people wanted to cuddle my hardback, because they really don't see fiction in that form very often, except for the real grandees like Peter Carey.

What I'm calling the 'paperback' is the B-format paperback (i.e. the larger size of mass-market) with new cover, due on 22nd March, not sure about the price but I'd guess £7.99 or £8.99. I think how it works is if that goes well, it'll be issued as an A-format a few months later, same cover as B-format, but the smaller mass-market size. As far as I know (which isn't very) that's exported directly, rather than having a different edition for you guys.

And of course the US hardback is due out in January. Different publisher, different design, slight tweaks to text.

I bet Caxton never had it so complicated...

Interesting because the hardcover is available here as well. Of course they take up more weight in the canoes which you understand is quite limited...

No doubt they recruit the polar bears to help. Kangaroos are obviously less cooperative.

No polar bears, sorry, too far south. Am in persona for my Niagara novel right now, writing about Voyageurs in the 1750's (interesting people) so have canoes on the brain.

So what is this other book you are writing or is it a secret?
