    Traveller, Robert Bloch read psychology books, and he credits this helped him write characters with depth. He definitely had an ability to get inside the mind of the characters he was writing. It certainly didn't do any harm. I'd go for it if you think it helps your writing. Even if it just helps as a reference to pick interesting traits for your characters, it’s got to be a plus.
