Hmm... enjoyed this but it's not very realistic for childrens writers, who are expected to write a book a year.

Taking a week off because I'm stuck, or spending months getting to know characters before I open a document doesn't feel very realistic!

Definitely. Feed the cats first, then the children, everything else can take care of itself!

Although pottering around in the garden can do wonders for solving plot problems.

I think I may well possibly write my next novel in the dust in my house...

I feel that my characters come alive as I write them. I get to know them as we all get to know someone - bit by bit. Planning their characters in detail before starting feels contrived to me. But then, what do I know?
