How would you say...

'She felt free-er than she had for months'
'She felt more free than she had for months' doesn't quite sound right.
And, should it be free-er or freer?
<Added>
Sorry the actual sentence is -
...but Karen felt freer than she had done for months.

in what way free-er - or freer!
More lighthearted?
More liberated?

Someone who frees people is a freer (as opposed to a free-er) so I imaging the same would apply to the comparative, making more free = freer.
I'd agree with 'more liberated' or 'more light-hearted'.
Or you could turn it round: 'It was months since she had felt so free' or 'She had not felt so free for months.'

Yes, I think I'd go along with what Chris said.

I've definitely seen "freer"... But I agree, it does look a little odd, which always means something is worth having a re-think about.
So, yes, re-casting it is the neatest way out, if you can without upsetting the whole paragraph completely.
