I found a technique that worked for me (I have an agent and the first of a trilogy is out to publishers - woohoo!), so I'd like to share it. Before writing anything / sending anything off or whatever stage you're at, it's worth taking some time to consider what you want and what your expectations are. Getting familiar with the feeling of having written a chapter just the way you want it before you start can speed up the whole process. It's a fast track to getting in the zone. After several rejections I applied the technique of thinking from the end and rewrote a 100,000 word novel (which had taken three years to write) in ten weeks.
