silly question - but why can't you just say "the room"?

I mean if it's clear from the context that they're in the toilet, does the reader need to be reminded of that?

Thanks to all of you. It's hard to give the impression of the context... the protagonist is in the loo room, and various action takes place in there, so the loo needs to be referred to separately from the room.
