    I like the idea of using red herrings as bookmarks. Mind you, it'd get pretty smelly after a few days.

    I do separate chapters all the way through, then at the end of each draft, I save it all as one (still keeping the individual files) and email it to myself as an attachment - another way of keeping an extra copy!

    Wow! I really am surprised you can send a whole novel as an attachment. I wonder if I've misunderstood. Couldn't you just put it on a datastick labelled 'draft 1', etc? Is the aim to save space?

    I think I tend to be conservative because I started with one of the really early domestic computers - my husband worked for BT and someone sold them a really naff models that were called 'Tonto'. He brought his home. They had hardly any memory space and were always crashing.

    Perhaps I saw a mention that I can keep a copy of my hard disc off-site. Maybe it was in Norton.
