When all's said and done, not to put too fine a point on it, it's not a hanging offence to bend the rules occasionally:

All things considered, I think it's okay to use the odd cliche now and then, as long as they are few and far between.

Maybe you can get away with more cliches in Childrens fiction because the readers are young enough that it's all new to them.
