  • what Newspaper?
by jewelsx at 11:11 on 23 February 2005

I am writing a short piece about this character who happens to buy a newspaper. This however got me thinking that i make assumptions and judgements on people by what newspaper they buy. Am i wrong? Is there many people here who enjoy readng the sun or other like minded tabloids insteasd of the broad sheets?

I think i am asking is if my character buys the Times will he be seen as more affluent, intelligent etc than if he bought the sun?

    Just a thought i had

Hi Jewels, I don't think you can beat this summary from Yes, Minister:

"The Times is read by the people who run the country. The Daily Mirror is read by the people who think they run the country. The Guardian is read by the people who think they ought to run the country. The Morning Star is read by the people who think the country ought to be run by another country. The Independent is read by people who don't know who runs the country but are sure they're doing it wrong. The Daily Mail is read by the wives of the people who run the country. The Financial Times is read by the people who own the country. The Daily Express is read by the people who think the country ought to be run as it used to be run. The Daily Telegraph is read by the people who still think it is their country. And the Sun's readers don't care who runs the country providing she has big tits."

yes, newspapers can be a good indicator of class etc but also to turn it on its head if used carefully.

I remember that from 'Yes, Minister'. Great fun to listen to but much more fun to read it and to applaud the very clever writing. Thanks Adele

I've never heard of 'Yes, Minister.' Is it always that funny?

What people read isn't as much of a reflection on character as whether or not that person believes what they are reading.

Yes, Ani. It’s always that funny. Made in the eighties, and starring the late Nigel Hawthorne and Paul Eddington, it was political satire at it’s superb best. Still showing on satellite/cable TV.
