  • Email Subs and Are We Pretentious?
by Silverelli at 19:52 on 10 February 2005
I've noticed that a lot of online and print magazines are only accepting submissions via email and firmly object to attachments. Is there a proper way to do this by email. Double space before you copy and paste your entry? How brief should the bio be? If anyone knows specific guidelines of going about this, please let me know.

    AND

When I attended a workshop last summer, one of the things mentioned on my work being critiqued was the fact that I did not indent at the start of every paragraph. It was said to be a "pretentious" effect. And unless I'm Joyce Carol Oates, I should indent my paragraphs. Now, I've come to realize it is impossible to indent when uploading work on WW. Are we pretentious? That is by far the last category I would want my writing to fall under.

As a general rule, in the absence of guidelines to the contrary, if I were submitting something in hard copy or if it was to be eventually produced as hard copy, I would format it traditionally with indented paragraphs. However, if it was to be produced onscreen, then usuability and readability dictates that paragraphs should not be indented but instead have a line break between them. In other words, it's easier to read.

Paragraphs? Indents? Words!? All old hat!

I would have thought that the very fact you wish to use the written medium to display your writing would indicate how you aspire to pretentiousness.

You are aware, of course, that all the most serious hard-core writers now use telepathy to disseminate their work.

Beadle (do you know what I'm tinking?)

That's tHinking of course! Sorry Silverelli - telepathy across the Atlantic is tough at this time of night. Lots of traffic about.
