  • Too short?
by Dwriter at 16:25 on 24 March 2009
I jut go through writing a new novel (or at least the first draft of a new novel) and it's coming in at 150 pages. Is that too short for a novel? Should I think about expanding it a little? I don't really know what the minimum length for a novel in terms of pages is supposed to be, so any help appreciated.

What is the word count, D?
150 sides of A4 is a little under 500 words, so I estimate that mss at 70K words.
It's fine for YA, but if it's Adult fiction I'd recommend bumping it up to 80K, so another 20 pages.

If it's adult fantasy fiction, aim for 100K words.

The word count is near enough 70K words. It's an adult science fiction novel, so I guess I want to pad it out a bit more. I actually realised on giving it a read through that there are chunks which I missed out originally (which I marked to come back at a later stage), so I guess I could put stuff in.
