So my youngest daughter was reading one of her school books to me, and at one point it said something like:
'This is a horrid adventure,' he thought.
Is that right? Do you think in quote marks?
I thought they were for speech alone. Can't find anything definitive online to confirm either way. It looks horrible.

You're right, bj, they shouldn't be in quotes, but some publishers have their own ideas about layout, or maybe they haven't employed an editor to correct it.

It's much more common in older books, I find, but publishers vary as to when they started dropping them.
