  • Capital for mum and dad?
    by Gillian75 at 12:48 on 11 July 2008
I'm 23,000 into my new WIP and I have a lot of 'thanks mum' and 'hi dad' in it. My initial thought is not to capitalise them, but I've had comments to the contrary.

I'd appreciate any input - I'd like to rectify it as soon as possible.

    thanks

Well checking in the nearest childrens book to hand, they do put them in capitals if they are used as the person's name or nickname, or similar. But not if it's just a common noun.
    eg:

"Hi, Dad," he said as his dad came into the room.

    or,

"Hello, Mum," he said as his mother came into the room.

Naomi's right. That's how mine has always been copy edited.
