  • Changing from Second/Third to First Person
by JasonX at 12:28 on 23 March 2008
In a novel of mine I'm looking at, I was planning on starting with a prologue in which two characters are portrayed in scond/third person. In the actual story however I was planning on turning it into first person with the characters narrating every second chapter.

How do you think this would work out?

I'm not sure how 2nd person would pan out, when you've also got 3rd person in there as well. I think it's probably a case of suck it and see.

I agree with Naomi - why are you using a combination of second and third for the prologue. What's the rationale and how are you organising that?

If you were using either and then changing to first I could see that working.

    Eeek - missing question mark.

Hard to comment in the abstract. But I think prologues can be separate and distinct enough to be in third if the rest of the story is in first. (A sort of bird's eye view of events or of your MC, before you home in?)

I never get on with second, myself, as a reader. And mixing second and third sounds even more risky. How would that work? Why not post the prologue or a section of it somehwere and invite comment?

If you have a prologue, it has to connect to the rest of the story at some point, and that might be difficult. Like the others, I don’t understand why you want to mix second and third POV. Prologues these days tend to be frowned on by some publishers, so they need to be short and to the point and, I would say, written in just one POV.

Welcome to WW! Why not post something up so that we can see what you're getting at?

I was actually refering to either third or second, I should've made that more clear. I wasn't intending on using both in the prologue, I'm not even sure how that would work :P Thanks for the help guys, oh and thanks fro the welcome
