Emma, thanks. These look really helpful. I've felt a fit of fiction coming on for a while and trying to make up my mind about whether I can afford an online short-story course I saw advertised in Writing Magazine. These will put me on nicely until the financial situation bucks up.

Also very useful for writing children's fiction, which is a form of short story afterall.

Glad they're useful. I've heard Jackie Kay talk about writing, and she's very good. Gives good reading too - well worth trying to get there if she's in your part of the world.

Couldn't find out about when Jackie Kay is next coming to London.

Here's a good site about writers giving talks. You can search by authors name, store or date. I see Tess Gerritson is travelling all over the country to publicise 'The Bone Garden'.

This is the Waterstone's chain, but it's worth asking your local bookshop if they plan similar events. Sometimes you don't have to pay and you get free wine and snacks!

The main point I want to make, susieangela, is that you can have the chance to put your questions face-to-face to a published writer.
