    I like 'the feel of' and see why you want to use it.

    How about making Shelly the subject of the whole sentence and avoiding the double 'had':

    She found, as she always had before, the feel of sanctuary in Kate's enveloping warmth, but still Shelly could not quite let go of her own tension.
