  • Capitalisation in dialogue
    by Al T at 13:04 on 26 April 2004
Hello, I wondered if someone could possibly help me with the following point. In dialogue, which is correct?:

    (a) Harry said, 'Go ahead, punk, make my day'

    or

    (b) Harry said, 'go ahead, punk, make my day?'

i.e. where do the capital letters go?

Thanks in advance for any help,

    Adele.

Oh, and also, the same question for sentences with multiple clauses, e.g.:

Jane said, 'he's gorgeous,' before pausing then adding, 'in a Pierce Brosnan kind of way.'

    Hi Adele,

Example (a) is correct, because it's the start of Harry's sentence. New dialogue lines should start with capital letters.

In the second sentence, I think it should be:

Jane said 'He's gorgeous.' before pausing then adding, 'In a Pierce Brosnan kind of way.'

Because if Jane paused, then she finished her first sentence, before adding to it.

I suppose you could also have:

Jane said 'He's gorgeous...' before pausing then adding '...in a Pierce Brosnan kind of way.' The dots signal that the sentence hasn't finished.

I'm sure someone will kindly correct me if I'm wrong!

Hi Milou and many thanks for that. I'd assumed that everyone else was just as unsure as me since no one answered. I eventually worked out the first part for myself when I stopped being lazy and looked at the dialogue in some of the books that I own. Part two though was not so clear, so thanks again.

    Adele.
