that I know the answer to but my mind has gone blank.
Is it -
She and Clare had decided...
or
Her and Clare hd decided...
Sorry, I know this is a stupid thing to ask, but I've just written about 3000 words and my mind is a muddled fess.

I think Claire and her had decided sounds best.

Clare even.

Hi there,
I think it's 'she and Clare' - the other one sounds awkward.

Cross-posted with you, Wax. Wasn't contradcting you - just to make that clear! :-)

Contradicting, even ;-)

Two different bits of advice
I had sort of decided it should be She and Clare, but not sure now as waxy's version sounds okay too.

Take out the 'and Clare' as a way of checking. 'She had decided' works; 'Her had decided' doesn't (except in dialect!).
-
I think I'd definitely go with 'she and Clare', personally. But that's just me.
-
I second that mermaid.
Can you say They had decided ?
-
Kate,
That's a good way of checking, thanks!
Yep, I'm going with the She and Clare...
Thanks everyone

Lammi's right, that's the test. Take out the other name, and you'll know what to do. Works for the I/me confusion as well, and us/we.

Yes. Lammi's right.
Damn. I came to this thread thinking I could finally show off about something.

Thanks everyone.
I should have known it really, but my brain just wasn't functioning properly - I had muddled up words swimming around. I really ought to teach myself to write at a more steady pace, but I've always been the same. I'll sit down one morning and write nonstop. I even forget to eat and everything, and only stop when I hear hubby's key in the door at half past six. But then I'll go for weeks without writing anything else.
A real erratic way of writing I know, but it seems to work for me, I just end up with a muddled brain after a whole day's writing!

That's how I always do it. Works brilliantly. I'd be lost sometimes without that little trick (as Emma says, great for I/me as well).

Doh! I meant to quote this before making that remark...
<Take out the 'and Clare' as a way of checking.>

Yes, She and Clare does sound better actually.

You wouldn't really say, "Her had decided" would you?
It also rhymes - which makes it feel funny when said outloud, unless that's my accent playing tricks.
