I've come to the end of the first draft of a new novel, and need some help. One of the characters is a boy of nineteen, raised in Ireland (Derry) who has been in England for a year. I've written his speech without attempting an accent, but I'd like a suggestion of the Irish in the phrasing. If anyone has the expertise to convert what I've written to reflect this I'd be eternally grateful and more than willing to do some editing in return, or to help in some area where I have special knowledge - art mostly. His speech takes up about eight pages. (3,500 words.)
Thanks in advance, and fingers crossed!
Nell.

Hope you'll all forgive me for reviving this just once - the forum topics slip down so quickly these days.

Nell, I'm sure someone will be able to help- it would be such a perfect way for the site to work, in a kind of exchange of creative and practical ways. Come on, Irish writers.
-
Nell, PeterOC is Irish. Maybe he could advise.

Nell,
I worked there for a while when I was young and as a Yorkhire man the lingo embdded in my mind. I may be able help in some way. If you want to E-Mail me on WW with your E-Mail address I will try try to help.
All the best Pete.

Pete, thanks, will WW mail you.

Dee, I didn't want to ask directly as I know not everyone has the time, but it looks as though Pete can help. Maybe we could keep this forum as one on which to post our pleas for help - what do you think?

Dunno, Nell.
I’ve tried a few times to start threads to help each other with research but they drop off the front page so quickly…
I’ve often thought we could do with a Research Forum. Maybe David and Co would give it some thought?

Check out the BBC Northern Ireland site. From there you can listen to the radio over the net, that might give you a feel too.

Thanks Geoff, I'll do that too. My mother is Irish, but she left fifty years ago, and there's no way she could replicate the speech of a young guy!

perhaps this would be a thread for the lounge forum and indeed a better use of the lounge forum which does not seem to be used overly much
good idea
take care

David, that might be an idea, although it seems like the wrong place, as it's to do with writing rather than idle chit chat! We could post up info. on our areas of expertise so that when anyone needed help they could go there and contact someone directly. Better see what David thinks though.

Nell, your last suggestion was great. Tropical medicine is what I could offer.

I could offer advice about living in South Africa, for instance. Its a great idea.
This site is really very supportive and can I just say I'm really glad to have joined and to be back. Already I feel part of a valuable community again, and for a budding writer, I think communicating with other writers like this has been the best thing to happen for my artistic endevours.

I could give advice on art techniques: painting (all media), etching, lithography, silk screen printing. I've also had quite a lot of exhibiting experience and I ran a private gallery for a year. I've also taught life drawing.
