For me, a 'story' is a series of interlinking events that illustrate something important to the writer. (the theme)
Its not the 'plot' (although thats the vehicle that carries the action)
Its not the characters (although they are the actors that act out the events that illustrate the 'something'
For a 'story' to be more than just a series of events (as in the relating of an evening out with mates) it has to carry thematic weight.
It has to change me, the reader a little.
I have to understand something about the world and how it is seen by that writer after I have put the story down.
