    A load of stroppy Giacomettis
    A disapproving Henry Moore

    That's iambic tetrameter, I think.

Perhaps it's reminding you of Hilaire Belloc ?

The Microbe is so very small
You cannot make him out at all,
    But many sanguine people hope
To see him through a microscope.

BTW, OED says "breeze block" ?

On the subject of bossy sculpture, statues coming to life seems to be very much the meme du jour, what with Night At The Museum and Stoneheart...

Do I mean Balzac? Yikes, art history A Level was a long time ago. The very phallic Rodin sculpture of a Famous French Writer in his dressing gown, anyway.

Think so - there was a piece in the LRB about it being shown in London recently...

Yes, that's what made me think of him. I love Rodin - must go see.

For me, a 'story' is a series of interlinking events that illustrate something important to the writer. (the theme)

Its not the 'plot' (although thats the vehicle that carries the action)

Its not the characters (although they are the actors that act out the events that illustrate the 'something'

For a 'story' to be more than just a series of events (as in the relating of an evening out with mates) it has to carry thematic weight.

It has to change me, the reader a little.
I have to understand something about the world and how it is seen by that writer after I have put the story down.

Well put. The truest stories are the ones that touch our souls.
