I'm enjoying Of Love and Hunger by Julian Maclaren Ross right now. Lovely depiction of a seedy pre-war England of boarding houses, sales reps, tawdry affairs and life on the margins of respectability. Have never read anything quite like it, understated, dry, wry, real and, well, extremely seedy. Something terrifically uncontrived about it all.
