This is the first book I've read by Hunter, and as an introduction I'm frankly bowled over by his writing.

Hunter S (Doctor), I presume! Which book, waxy? The man is breathtaking; wicked flights of fancy combined with incredible political acuity and honesty, and a wondrous prose style..........Much more still to enjoy!

I only recently read my first Hunter, that being Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Enjoyed it thoroughly. I might pick this one up next.

Rum Diary is superb - and, scarily, largely autobiographical. The journalists, the bars, the booze, the very weird and scary parties!!! And the nightmare political situation. Brilliant.

I'm throroughly absorbed. Did you know they're making it into a film with Johnny Depp? should be good.

Nothing is as funny as Fear and Loathing, but his book about Hell's Angels is pretty damn good.

Sue - have you read Kingdom of Fear? That's full of gutbuster moments.........I think Rum Diary is equal to F & L.

I agree about Depp, and I'm really looking forward to reading more of Hunter, now I've found him!

Hunter and I attended rival high schools, albeit at different times. (But from reading the various eulogies following his death, I gather that he doesn't have many fond memories from that time!)

Kemtucky's very pretty. I'm in Cornwall now. It's been over ten years since I've really really lived in the US. It can be a rather frustrating place to call home, as most people suffer from a very parochial world view. I am in Cornwall now, and you could argue that the same would hold true here, but I find people in Cornwall far more broad-minded! I imagine this was at the root of HST's sufferings in Good Ole Kentuck'.

I used to live in Penzance for five years. Where abouts are you? it is a lovely place to live if you like the countryside and the sea in all its drama.
