    Just a couple I know about:


    Vestal Review http://www.vestalreview.net/, is announcing its first flash fiction contest.

    In its fourteen quarterly issues since March 2000, Vestal Review has had the honor of publishing the works of many great writers, including Katharine Weber, Mike Resnick, Aimee Bender, Sam Lipsyte, Kirk Nesset, Judith Cofer, Bruce Boston and Liz Rosenberg. VR contributors have been published in the New Yorker, Playboy, Georgia Review, Zoetrope, Paris Review, Gettysburg Review, O'Henry Prize Stories, Pushcart Prize Anthology and elsewhere. Their novels have been published by Norton, Random House, St. Martin's Press and others. VR is an official Pushcart-nominating press. VR's stories have been reprinted in the Mammoth Book of Minuscule Fiction and E2Ink anthologies.

    Reading for the contest begins October 1 and continues until November 15. No regular entries will be accepted during this time. The theme of the contest is "Soft Thunder," which is open for interpretation.

    The awards will be as follows: $50 for the 1st place, $25 for the 2nd, $20 for 3rd, and $15 to three finalists. The six final entrants will be published the issue 16 of Vestal Review, and will get printed copies of the issue in addition to cash prizes. 7th to 10th place contestants will get printed copies of the issue.

    $5 fee per entry is payable via Paypal to writer@stny.rr.com or by check written to Mark Budman. The check submissions are to be mailed to:

    You can enter as many times as you wish. All submissions are to be e-mailed to vestalreview@netscape.net. Pasted submissions only, no attachments of any kind. The word count of any submission shall not exceed 500 words. All submissions have to have a name, e-mail, postal address and phone number. The subject line must start with the words "Contest Submission" or the entry will be disqualified.

    Except for compensation, all contest entries are bound by the Vestal Review regular contract.

    The final contest judge is Katharine Weber. Katharine Weber is the author of the novels The Little Women, Objects in Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear and The Music Lesson. She is on the board of the National Book Critics Circle and teaches fiction writing at Yale. Katharine's work has appeared in The New Yorker, London Review of Books, The New York Times Book Review, Vogue, Southwest Review, and numerous other publications. She lives in Connecticut and spends parts of the year in Ireland and France.
