2004 Richard Yates Short Story Award Competition

Author Steve Almond will judge the 2004 Richard Yates Short Story Award
Competition for the popular literary journal Night Train. Almond is the author of
Candyfreak, My Life in Heavy Metal, and a new collection of short stories due
in 2005 tentatively titled The Evil B.B. Chow and Other Stories.
Night Train, the acclaimed biannual specializing in short fiction, will
accept submissions for the Yates competition from September 1 through November 20.
Preferred story length: 2,000 to 5,000 words. Entry fee is $10, and entrants
will receive a copy of Night Train Issue V. The Yates competition winner
receives $500 and publication in Issue V Spring 2005.

Night Train accepts flash fiction , short stories, and novellas. Subscribers
include high-profile literary agents, and the editors of Night Train work
hard to promote exposure for writers at conferences, readings and book fairs. As
a non-profit organization, Night Train seeks funding from towns with unique
rail histories, and each of these "Rail Stop" sponsors receives a photo essay
featuring its town and businesses. Other funding, also vital to Night Train's
longevity, comes from individual sponsors and donors.
