by Anna Reynolds at 15:24 on 06 March 2007
-in my humble opinion, if you fit the criteria- you don't even have to teach!!

'The University of Manchester's Centre for New Writing will be launched in September 2007 and is looking to recruit four new colleagues to join a team that will also include as new appointees, Martin Amis, Patricia Duncker and Vona Groarke.

    2 x Fellowships in Creative Writing (0.5fte) Reference: HUM/70052
School of Arts, Histories and Cultures, Centre for New Writing

The Centre is an exciting development which is designed to develop and refine the creative and critical work of our postgraduate and undergraduate students, and to encourage collaboration between creative and critical writers. The successful candidates will play a key role in the development of the University of Manchester's Centre for New Writing.

The Fellowships provide residencies for professional writers who have already successfully published at least one book of poetry or fiction, and would welcome the support of the intellectual community at the University of Manchester while working on their next book.
The Fellows are not required to teach but are expected to take a full and active part in the Centre's occasional seminars, to make themselves available to the Centre's students and, at the end of their term, to give a public reading. The positions will run from 1 September 2007 to 31 January 2008 and from 1 February 2008 to 15 July 2008.

    Salary:£25,889 p.a. pro rata

I think that sounds so cool; unfortunately I won't have 'successfully published a book of fiction' until next year. And you probably need a degree in English or something related. Otherwise I'd apply.

Damn! A year too early! East Anglia sometimes does these, too.

I don't think you would need a degree, though- partly because you're not teaching, and also because they don't state it upfront. I've done loads of residencies/fellowships in all sorts of places from universities to prisons and everything in between and have no degree, and have always been very upfront about that when applying/being interviewed, and it's never been an issue.

No, I'm sure that's right - they might want a degree for a long-term-type lecturer/teacher, but what they want here is a writer, I'm sure - though it would probably help to be able to demonstrate some kind of experience of talking about writing - it wouldn't do them much good to have the kind of writer who can't or won't articulate anything about what they do.

I might just email the guy to see if they might consider me. You never know, I may be the best of a bad bunch.

She came to the Readers Day at Beverley last year and was brilliant - a huge personality and so entertaining and perceptive.
