Thanks everyone. Have to say I feel torn between thanking you all and allowing this thread to drift down the list of forum topics. Still, there's always rejection about, had one myself the day before yesterday, and I always feel cheered when someone on site is published. Having had my share for a while I'll leave this now for the next piece of good news.

Here's a curious thing.
I started writing late last year, with the plan of spending at least 12 months learning more about the craft (if I could do it/what style could I do/how it should be done/etc).
Anyway, my wife submitted an early draft of my first ever short story ('Tableland' - drowsy epic about yuppie lost at sea experiencing visitations from ghosts of previous oceanic victims) to the Dylan Thomas International Creative Arts Comp (as advertised on WW) - and it won third prize! This is curious not only because I didn't know I had entered but also: the draft wasn't very good and the organisers never told me (I found the list on their website and emailed them).
The moral here is that there is hope for us all, and never leave unfinished drafts of your work lying around.

Congrats Julian, maybe that's the best way to enter a comp, via a third party. Well deserved, if there's a monetary prize I suggest your lovely wife gets 10 %.
