  • Help!
by sazzyjack at 14:15 on 21 March 2006
I'm getting so frustrated. As I have mentioned previously, an agent requested a full copy of my mss in January. 4 weeks later, on 15th Feb, I emailed him asking if he would be kind enough to accept a revised copy as I had changed it since he had asked for it. He didn't reply.
I emailed him on Sunday, 9 weeks to the day since I sent him the original copy, politely asking him if he'd had a chance to consider it yet. I said I understood that he will have had a busy couple of weeks recently with the London Book Fair, but that I was quite anxious, and wondering what was happening.
Again, there's been no reply. I know it's only been 2 days, but I'm getting really frustrated at the silence.
    What should I do?

Sit tight and wait. I've been there so many times, all you can do is wait - it's so frustrating, but they will respond eventually!

Sazzyjack - it's only been a couple of months. He may not have had time to open it yet - I'd wait till it's been 3 months, and then give a polite ring to an assisant/secretary.

    Good luck!

    Hi Sazzy

I'm in an uncannily similar situation - sent synopsis in Jan - publisher requested more within a week - I sent more - heard nothing for 4 weeks - polite email asking if she received it ok - yes she did and would get back 'within the week' - and now another 6 weeks have passed without a word. I think it's probably 'normal' but I waver between possibly deluded optimism -how long does it take to say no- and pessimism - what happened to her initial enthusiasm?

I completely share your feelings though. Do you, too, check your email hourly, stare hopefully at the phone all day, and feel a leaden sense of doom when Friday night comes and there definitely won't be any news before Monday? I worry about myself sometimes the amount of time I spend thinking about it!

Good luck. I DO think that being new at this (well, I am) I'm just not used to how very slowly the pace of everything moves in this game. Fingers crossed for you!

    Thanks Guys,
Merry, yeah I'm new to this too. Just being impatient I guess. It's just the fact that there's been no reply to either of my enquiries either that bothers me. The whole thing was a little unorthodox. He requested the entire thing by email 15 minutes after I sent him an enquiry email and a brief synopsis. Then... nothing.
Yes, I check my emails breathlessly every hour. It seriously hampers having a normal life!

I would mention that my agent took a month to read the full ms the first time, wanted some alterations, and took 3 months to reread, and approve.

However, he does and always has replied to email enquiries, often immediately, at the least within a week, or if he is away someone in his office responds, even if they don't know the exact position.

Just to mess up your weekends - I get emails after hours as well.

I would feel inclined to give it to the 3 months and then raise the query, email and/phone. Good luck with this.
