I know, and I think a type writer would do a better job.

Actually, I do remember some tiny, inky lever deep in the bowels of a manual typewriter, which you could set to 1½, but then you were stuck with 1½ and nothing else

My first typewriter was a monster Triumph thing. It weighed about 3stone and you could set the line spacing anywhere from half a space to 6 spaces. The keys must have been counterweighted or something because, despite it being a beast of a machine, it responded to featherlight touches. Unlike the small, modern portable typewriter I got to replace it, on which I nearly broke each and every finger.

I'd love to be present in a meeting where an editor holds up a script and says...

"it's everything we want. Perfect. Double spaced type, wide margins, single sided. It even has page numbers and a header with the author's name and a contact number."

"Yeah? Sounds too good to be true. So what's the problem?"

"The story. It's fucking shite!"
