Having finally completed my first novel I'm just starting looking for an agent...but where do I start?
Anyone got any advise as to where a romantic / comic story might be received with interest. I don't want to waste time and money bothering agents who are really looking for other genres. Cheers

Hi, Craig. The best thing to do is get a copy of The Writer's Handbook and The Writers' and Artists' Yearbook, and go through the lists of agents in each to see which accepts your type of fiction or who has authors (sometimes they mention their authors) who write in a similar style.
You could also go into bookshops, grab a few books in your genre and then see if the author names their agent in the acknowledgements.
Good luck!

When you've got a list of possible agents, make sure you send them exactly what they ask for in the way of numbers of chapters, synopses, SAEs etc. Some say in WAYB, some list on their website. Don't give them the impression you can't do simple research when needed, and don't give them any opportunity to bin it for not fulfilling their rules.
