Hi, as some of you may know from another thread, I'm going to have my novel published by Macmillan under their New Writing imprint. Someone - I think it was Silverelli - suggested I should start a blog. Well, I have. It's going to be a kind of journal of the whole publication process. There's not a lot on it at the moment as I've just been on holiday. Just a bit of an intro. I will be putting more on over the next couple of days. Fancy checking it out and saying hello? All comments appreciated.

Good luck with this. The extract is marvellous, I loved the line 'It is as if she has presented him with a leather-goods interpretation of himself'. Very witty.
I couldn't figure out how to post on your blog, to be honest, so I...um...didn't.

Good idea, roger! I have a couple of questions. Howlong did it take you after submitting your ms for them to get back to you, and accept you? What's the deal with paperback rights? Does Macmillan have them or are they up for grabs, and if so, after how long? If you can sell them that makes it all the more interesting, of course...
-
Ah - you couldn't post to my blog??? That's a problem. I must have chosen a bad format. That should be possible. But thanks for taking a look. I will try to sort that out tonight.

this was a reply to waxlyrikal, by the way.

hi aruna and thanks. the reply was pretty quick - under three months, I think.
As for the paperback rights thing, the honest answer is, I'm not sure. Do they count as 'subsidiary rights'? If so, the contract states that proceeds from the sale of subsidiary rights will be split 50-50 between writer and publisher. Macmillan will handle the sale.
What I have found out is that they are rushing this through so they can get it to their rights people in time for the Frankfurt Book Fair. I have no idea, but I'm kind of thinking it's good they want to take it to Frankfurt? I am expecting the proofs to check this week. Mike Barnard, the publisher, has said they are 'jumping on it' to get it ready. It looks like it will be one of the early titles out under the new imprint, which I'm pleased about too.
This is all stuff I will try to work up in more detail for my blog. I'm at work now so I really shouldn't be doing this!!!

This is nice for me to read up on
I initially looked at it as a possible outlet for me but was a bit wary when reading that they retained all rights to the works.
If it's not as bad as all that i might give it a go.
Good luck withthe book fair!

The Frankfurt Book Fair is the biggest international book fair in the world. I've been a couple times and its very boring for authors, but its where publishers go and tarde with each other like crazy. It's like a stock exchange! OK, not quite that bad! What it means basically is that they are going to try an dfind foreign publishers for you, and as it's the first time there's sure to be a lot of interest. I really wish you a lot of luck with Frankfurt! It's a BIG event! There are also movie moguls looking for the Next Big Thing - The Horse Whisperers was bought at Frankfurt, even before the book rights were sold.
-
very nice, roger.
look forward to reading it. I noticed you linked your page to Robin Slick's. Be sure to ask her if her sons would be interested in doing the soundtrack for the movie adaptation of Taking Comfort. I hear they rock.

In case anyone's not sure, 'All rights' only means selling the right to publishin paperbacks, translations, editions in other territories, film, TV, audio etc. etc. In the days before agents, it was rare for your hardback publisher not to sell those for you, as authors themselves aren't really in a position to do it. It's not a question of giving away copyright, or losing your right to do other things with the work. Now, with vertical publishing, paperback is usually part of the original contract, but all the other rights are sold - often at Frankfurt - either by your agent, or your publisher, or a mixture of both.

Thanks, Emma, for posting this. It's cleared things up a bit, even for me (and I'm the one who signed the contract!).
Congratulations on your deal, by the way, which is far more impressive.
When's your first book due out?
-
Roger, I managed to leave a comment on your blog, but had to remain anonymous to do so, as if I'd logged in I would have had to navigate away and lose what I'd written. Congratulations on the MacMillan contract.
Looking forward to reading more, after you've enjoyed your holiday.

Thanks Sheila - I think I spotted your post, but maybe not. There are a lot of anonymous spam comments on my blog that are really starting to p*ss me off. I have a little dustbin icon visible next to them but they don't go away when I try to delete them.
I now have a book cover design for the book which I am going to add to my blog tonight, I hope, along with a bit of an update.
(I'm back from my holiday, by the way!)

OK. I expect the blog protocols will seem workable as time goes on. I hope so, anyway. Did someone recommend this particular blogsite? I use one called greatcities.com for my photos and it supports text. However, it's really for people who travel about, I think. Look forward to seeing the book cover design.

Hi Sheila, and everyone. I've posted some more stuff on my blog. A little bit of background - such as how long it took for them to make the decision etc. And I managed to get a picture of the cover design up there!
I'd be interested to know what people think.

Liked the cover a lot. Made me think of 'The Taking of Pelham 353' ( a film; the number may be wrong)
