Totally agree with him that it's a numbers game.
Yup, I've found that to be true, too. Possibly, some writers don't like to admit this is the case, maybe because it could look like a lack of success - having a lot of stories rejected a lot of times. The myth is that you develop your skills to the point of genius, then anything you write will be instantly snapped up. But the truth is, that even if you're an excellent writer, your kind of excellent won't suit every magazine or every editor at every time of day. So you need to have a lot out there.
There are exceptions. For instance, I wrote a story specifically for a magazine's theme that edition - something that's normally risky to do. But I couldn't resist the theme, and I sold it to them. But like I said, that's an exception, not a model to work with.
