Dee - a friend of mine is giving this a try; he lives in Bedford as, by coincidence, does the publisher. Apparently, once/if the book sells, the author gets a straight 50% of profit! Not bad. Initial costs depend upon size of MS etc., but. the book can be printed and in the within 45 days of contract. Better than invisible WMD's!!

Mike, I still can’t find any details about it. I’ve checked Waterstones and Independent websites but couldn’t see anything. A friend at work said she heard about it on Front Row so I checked on Listen Again but I was too late.

The Winter House is being read by a publisher at the moment so I’m waiting to see what sort of reaction it gets before I take this much further.

I’ve just realised I might have misunderstood you. Did you mean your friend was trying the Waterstones route or going with Macmillan?

Thanks Terry, I was looking for the Waterstones deal, but it’s interesting to read about the Macmillan deal from their point of view.

I've seen their contrac and what have you and it all looks very kosher. They've been trading since 1997 and have published some 22,000 titles!
There are various types of deal with greatly differing costs, but, three things are constant -

You retain all rights to your material

You have control over design and production

    " " " " over print-run size

    Worth investigating, I think.

    Best,

Mike, many thanks for that. It does look interesting. I’ve found their website and bookmarked it.

    Emma,
if all else fails, i think I would go for the macmillan deal. My circumstances are a bit different, in that I've alredy had books published and my boggest problem is getting around the aquisitions team, due to the "nonsaleable" issue of my chosen location. As my previous books sold reasonably well (without coming near to being bestsellers) I might get bookshop orders.
I found a great way of getting out of "first refusal" options: I sent my last publisher a first draft of my next novel, which i was sure they would refuse. They did.
But I wanted to dump them anyway, because I felt they weren't doing my writing any good.
Yes, I;d go for it, if that was the only way left.

I've gone totally - and literally left-field - and written to George Galloway, about something else principally, but also gently enquiring whether or not Friction, his new publishing house, might consider some poetry................

Hi, well, guess what - I did accept the deal. I signed with them about a week ago. My agent looked at the contract for me (I subbed to them without telling him, though I did 'fess up later). He advised me to go ahead with it. My main hope is that I will be in the first wave (I think I'm one of the first ten or so authors they have signed up.) So my book will come out when there's a lot of attention. It will be published in 2006, though they haven't told me exactly when yet. I think they're still deciding the exact running order.

Obviously having done this, I'm interested to know if other people think I'm mad.

By the way, I'm new here, so hi everybody.
