Am I alone in seeing a confusingly mixed message in starting a blog, which has the sole purpose of getting someone known, then leaving the blogger profile utterly anonymous?
A bit like sending out 20% off vouchers but neglecting to say what they are for.

Anonymous blogs do build up a following, if they're sufficiently witty and fascinating or whatever. In the old days, when there were fewer, it could do really well - specially if it involved sex, of course - and lead to a book deal.

You build up the following, and then - ta-da - reveal who you are and when the book's out. And you can say to your agent, then possible publisher, "I have 10,000 hits a day, and when I announce the book they'll all buy it." But it's much harder these days, because the blogging competition's much fiercer.

Of course, if one reason for the anonymity is that you're then freer to say or invent stuff, then you've got a problem when you go public...

I'm not sure if this refers to a specific eg and I'm therefore missing something - but isn't this a very big assumption? There are lots of blogs which are written for totally different reasons - to vent about a job, a situation, to crowdsource knowledge, or just for the sheer love of sounding off into a void.

Some bloggers are there to make a name for themselves - but some may not ever have any intention or wish to go public.

Then, the answer is yes, I am alone in thinking that.

I can remember when all you'd need to do would be a quick brush down, saddle up and away you go. Nowadays, it takes me half an hour to get it lit and then there are all those valves to adjust...

You can get computer controlled ones - terribly fancy - I wouldn't have a clue what to do if it went wrong. But yes, I liked the days when you just lifted the bonnet, tossed in some hay (and if you'd run out, it would go quite well on pony nuts, or even chip fat) and off you went.

Well you can, but you'll knock a few bob off the residual and probably need an entire new set of gaskets. You'd be better off uninstalling the grommet-manager and moving to Lanarkshire.

If you do that, you're talking telephone numbers. Unless you can find a good cowboy... but you can't get a decent cowboy, these days, they've no training, not properly - just an NVQ in Cowboying, and half of that's Media Studies. They're just bloody plumbers, these days.
