  • Advice needed

    Hi,
I've been writing for a while and I've been submitting novels I've finished to agents. I've had some good feedback on my writing, plenty of requests for 'fulls' and some agents have asked to see anything else I write.

What does 'see anything else I write' mean, and how should I send it?

I have just completed another novel and emailed it to the agent who showed a lot of interest in the last one as soon as I subbed it.

Have I done the right thing just sending it direct to her by email, to the address she replied to from my last one? I sent a covering letter and synopsis explaining the above in case she doesn't remember my work.
Should I have sent three chapters by post?

How long would you expect to wait in these circumstances? Would it be treated the same as a postal sub timewise?

Thanks in advance for your replies. I suppose I'm just worried and impatient.

You could have just submitted the first 3 chapters, but it should be ok, so long as you've reminded her of who you are in the body of the email, rather than in an attachment. If the latter then the email is liable to be deleted if they don't remember you and assume it's just an unsolicited submission from a stranger and their submission guidelines state postal submissions only.

As with any submission expect to wait up to 3 months for a reply.
Meanwhile you may as well get submitting to other agents, rather than sit there twiddling your thumbs.

    Good luck.

    Hi Vanessa,
I agree with Naomi. It will take as long as a postal sub to respond to. I think it's fine that you sent the whole thing since she showed such interest, though perhaps 3 chapters might have been more normal. I don't think she'll object.
I think the feedback you've been getting sounds very promising indeed. Good luck!

Sounds fine to me, Vanessa. Let us know how you get on

Thanks very much for the advice, I do feel a little better now and am not checking my email as much!

I think my misunderstanding was because this particular agent emailed me the day after I sent a postal submission and asked for the full, and read it in a week, unfortunately she didn't like the middle part as much as the beginning or the end.

I expect I will just have to wait and see.

    Thanks again.

Yes, I'm sure that it doesn't matter - as you say, she was interested last time, and you made that clear in the email. Very encouraging about your work! Very best of luck with it.

Agree with what the others said...I think in this case it's fine to have sent her the whole thing, Vanessa.

For what it's worth, in this situation I emailed first and said, 'You may remember etc...' and the agent in question then asked to see the full. The only small benefit of that would be that you might be in her mind a little more than with an email out of the blue. Hope not annoying for me to say that, but just in case was useful I thought I'd mention. But I'm sure it's fine! And fingers crossed for you...

Thank you again for your answer, I'll know what to do if there is a next time. It's so tempting to rush at it, I probably should have asked first :-)
