  • Email or hard copy submissions?
by cacooper at 13:16 on 04 May 2011
My agent has said she is happy to see my latest submission by email or hard copy. I live in France so email is a bit easier for me but I wondered if hard copy is easier to read? Or does it not matter either way? Any thoughts?

I'm sure if she says either is fine, either is fine.

FWIW I would always send email if you have the option. If she wants a printout she can do one according to her own prefs, ie single sided/double/two sides a page etc. Or she read it on her e-reader (lots of eds/agents use these now) rather than lugging 300 pages to and fro on the tube. Much better all round.

Thanks - I'll do that then. Much easier for me anyway!

I'd send email everytime - it's so much easier - and cheaper!

Yes, e-mail seems to be increasingly the preferred option, as e-readers become more popular! Cheaper and easier too

I'm v. impressed that you already have an agent. Do you show him/her your work while it's still at quite an early stage, or do you wait until it's super polished, like you would if you were making a cold submission?

Well saying I have an agent is slightly overstating it - eight years ago (!) I was taken on by Darley Anderson for a chicklit novel I wrote. The agent there was v excited about it but failed to find a publisher, partly due to the large volume of chick lit around. Then I had kids, less time etc so it's only just now I've actually written something else, so I've been back in touch - the agent I dealt with has now retired but I guess it's still good to have an "in" ? Last time I showed them the novel at an early stage and she was brilliant about giving advice but this time as it's a different person and because I was on a bit of a roll with it and got it finished quickly I thought I'd do the whole thing and then send. Bit nervous now though....
