I wasn't sure where to put this, but hey ho.
I've just finished reading Story by Robert McKee and it is completely amazing.
It's aimed at screenwriting, but most of the advice works equally well for prose writing, particularly novels.
Has anyone else read it? What did you think?

I've dipped, with a great deal of scepticism because so much 'writing' advice is actually scriptwriting advice, and it's a much tighter and more prescriptive form than fiction.
But, as so often, McKee's is the real thing, and it's very, very good, as long as you read it with that caveat: he is talking about film, not my beloved baggy monster of a form...

I've had it for ages but still not got past the first few pages. Find t v dificult to read non-fiction, I'm afraid.

It's fab, Jem. An absolute must.

Totally agree and have attended his seminar which is the most exhausting course ever. A gem.

You lucky thing.
I was going to go last Autumn but couldn't get enough child care.

I read it after his seminar. He was such fun in the flesh that the book is just a reminder of the course - he covered every detail of the book on stage and was as witty as a stand up.
I think it's brilliant.

I found it a bit heavy going, But I've just read something similar, from another screenwriter described as a legend, and I found this one brilliantly helpful..
It's The Anatomy of Story, by John Truby.
