There's an article in the latest edition of The Author about self-publishing. On the whole, it seems to be saying that it can work for an author with a great book who's prepared to work hard at promoting it, but that for the vast majority there is a need to be very wary of the claims made by most self-publishing publishers. It mentions AuthorHouse, a US company that set up a branch in the UK last summer. AuthorHouse has some big successes – one of its authors wrote Legally Blonde and another the book that was turned into the film Proof of Life; they also have some big name authors like Luke Rhinehart and Rita Rudner. I haven't checked out their website very closely but thought I'd flag it up for anyone who might be interested. I should perhaps emphasise that The Author was not necessarily recommending AuthorHouse, just pointing to its existence.
