  • Recommend a printer or POD?
by booky at 17:54 on 22 October 2009
    Hello all,

Making the most of my free trial here

Can anyone recommend a printer or self publisher that they've used and were happy with, hoping I can do it all electronically sending my work by email/ other format??

I'm not looking for amazingly professional results just wish to get the info in my book out there to the people it can help.

    Low price would be good.

I haven't used them but if I were going to go down that route I'd look at Lulu first.

I did a sample one with Lulu a few years ago and the quality was pretty good. I think there are even more options around these days. POD does mean you can just print one sample first, so just try one.

As the others have said, Lulu is one of the better ones.

However, they do have a number of add-ons that push up the cost. I would just go for the basic package that supplies an ISBN number. With that a reader can order your book from any bookshop (although it won't physically be stocked by the bookshops).

I believe Amazon have now hooked up with their own PoD publisher (I have a feeling it's the one linked to HarperCollins' Authonomy website) and will not list Lulu titles, so probably something worth checking out.

Does Lulu count as self-publishing then? I'll eventually get a copy made of my wip if it doesn't get agented, but i don't want to self-publish, i just want a copy of it in book form???

If you are just making yourself a few proofreading copies, and Most Importantly don't asign an ISBN number then it doesn't count as Self Publishing in the sense that you are making copies for general sale.

Oh, and make sure it doesn't appear on Lulu's books-for-sale website.

    Where are you located?

I know a fantastic printer in Kendal (Cumbria) if you want to go the traditional route - great value, great product. YOu can do it all yourself or they will help wit design etc
