  • Does youtube count as "previously published"?
by Mica at 03:11 on 20 March 2009
    Hello

I'm planning to upload some videos of myself reading out load my own work. However, I know a lot of journals and magazines etc will only accept work that is previously unpublished. Does anyone know if youtube counts? Would it be a problem if I put up a video of my work and then later tried to get it published?

    Thanks
    Mica

If you're talking about short stories which you may then wish to enter into verious competitions which specify 'not previously published', then, yes, reading it out on YouTube would count as self-publishing.
However it can be good to build up a listening audience. Personally I would use the stories you've previously submitted to competitions.

Hmmm, thanks. I guess I'll just have to keep trying to get stuff published, then put it up on youtube.

I think that's the best way round I'd do it.
